Baskets, Baskets & StorageThe traditional fine weave basket collection is a beautiful synergy of 100% natural dyes: bold black, white and brown stripes combine in a most striking, tribal effect. These striped baskets in a wonderfully fine and supple weave are one-of-a-kind, hand woven in Kenya’s rural Coastal Region by a skilled craftswoman working to her own weave patterns and colour choices. The women who create these traditional striped baskets have woven from a young age: this meticulous, income-generating craft is traditionally passed down along the female line in Kenya. These craftswomen weave within a small but expanding cooperative led by the inspirational Madam Dorcas as Chairlady. Where once these weavers would travel regularly to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets, The Basket Room now provides them with regular and fairly-paid orders, and these completed baskets are then stored in purpose-built mud huts. Each woven basket is supplied with a thank you card from the weaving cooperative. Production takes place primarily during the dry seasons, since the majority of weavers are from farming families who rely largely on subsistence farming and rainfall.
