The story behind the Tawulo comes from way back when the weavers in West Africa used natural dyes with a limited colour pallet. Once they saw European dyed fabric with brighter colours they would trade to get this cloth, which they would then unravel to get the yarn. The yarn was then rewoven into their own fabrics, often mixing different colours together which created a textured and uneven colour pallet. This technique has been integrated into the Tawulo. Each towel comes out slightly differently due to the random rolling of the weft yarn in the weaving process. 100% Cotton Hemmed Designed, woven and made in South Africa. These craftswomen weave within a small but expanding cooperative led by the inspirational Madam Dorcas as Chairlady. Where once these weavers would travel regularly to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets, The Basket Room now provides them with regular and fairly-paid orders, and these completed baskets are then stored in purpose-built mud huts.       The traditional fine weave basket collection is a beautiful synergy of 100% natural dyes: bold black, white and brown stripes combine in a most striking, tribal effect. These striped baskets in a wonderfully fine and supple weave are one-of-a-kind, hand woven in Kenya’s rural Coastal Region by a skilled craftswoman working to her own weave patterns and colour choices. The women who create these traditional  striped baskets have woven from a young age: this meticulous, income-generating craft is traditionally passed down along the female line in Kenya. These craftswomen weave within a small but expanding cooperative led by the inspirational Madam Dorcas as Chairlady. Where once these weavers would travel regularly to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets, The Basket Room now provides them with regular and fairly-paid orders, and these completed baskets are then stored in purpose-built mud huts. Each woven basket is supplied with a thank you card from the weaving cooperative. Production takes place primarily during the dry seasons, since the majority of weavers are from farming families who rely largely on subsistence farming and rainfall.
