[dropcap1]T[/dropcap1]he 24th April 2017 marks the 4th annual Fashion Revolution Day, where consumers worldwide are asked to show their labels and ask #whomademyclothes.
As a member of the South African Fashion Revolution team, Nikki Stear – co-founder of Native Interiors, has asked a few of our jewellery partners to be a part of the movement this year and show us who made your jewellery. Thank you to Sidai and Soko for celebrating your beautiful artisans and helping improve transparency in the fashion industry.
Why Transparency Matters
Lack of transparency costs lives. It’s impossible for companies to make sure human rights are respected and that environmental practices are sound without knowing where their products are made. That’s why transparency is essential. Transparency means companies know who makes their clothes and accessories and communicate this to their customers, shareholders and staff.
This is what Fashion Revolution is asking for:
Knowledge, information, honesty.
To be truly transparent, we also need to be accountable so that we and others can be sure what we say is true. Fashion Revolution Day is not holding companies to account, that is the job of customers and certifiers. Fashion Revolution is here to celebrate the companies who are doing one of these things to be more transparent about who makes their clothes and accessories. It’s up to shoppers to make sure companies are doing what they say they are.
