Large Unique Fine Weave Sisal Baskets

      ,
The baskets from our Unique Fine Weave Basket collection feature intricate highly skilled baskets weaves that create unique designs, hand woven in Kenya and made in five different sizes. Use our smaller baskets as funky planters or as bright and stylish desk tidies for all your pens and pencils. Our larger designs make fabulous storage baskets for multi-purpose use all over the home - from the bathroom and the kitchen to the living room and the playroom. The women who create these striped baskets have woven from a young age: this meticulous, income-generating craft is traditionally passed down along the female line in Kenya. These craftswomen weave within a small but expanding cooperative led by the inspirational Madam Dorcas as Chairlady. Where once these weavers would travel regularly to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets, The Basket Room now provides them with regular and fairly-paid orders, and these completed baskets are then stored in purpose-built mud huts. Each woven basket is supplied with a thank you card from the weaving cooperative. Production takes place primarily during the dry seasons, since the majority of weavers are from farming families who rely largely on subsistence farming and rainfall. To buy one of our woven baskets is to become part of our story: a tale of empowerment, dignity, and fair trade. Material: Sisal Dimensions (approx): XS: 10 - 15cm dia S:  16 - 20cm dia M: 21 - 25cm dia L:  26 - 30cm dia Please note, as this is a handmade product, dimensions & colour may vary from those shown in the photographs. Fairtrade & handmade in Kenya.
