Mungo is a unique textile company, founded in 1998 by Master weaver Stuart Holding. We are based in the seaside town of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa and housed in the historical homestead of Old Nick Village. Here we have a Working Weaving Museum where all our sampling is done on 19th Century Lancashire looms.
Our boutique mill is situated in The Crags, about 15 minutes from Mungo HQ. Mungo possesses the rare ability to produce a fabric from the initial idea to the finished product. This allows us to be organic in our design process. Some of our designs are based on historic pattern books, adapted to give a creative or modern edge. Others have African influence, from traditional textiles and techniques collected on travels. We still lay out the design on traditional graph paper which is translated and punched by hand onto the pattern card. Once one of our fabrics has been designed and created we take it home and live with it. It is tested and used. The product then grows from the cloth as we become familiar with its individual characteristics. It is from here onwards that our fabrics are refined, resulting in exemplary handle and quality.
Today, Mungo remains a family run business, crossing generations. We strive to preserve and develop the traditional art of weaving. Fair trade principles and traceability underpin our ethos. We are particular about sourcing only quality natural fibres, and our fabrics are constructed for longevity.

Tawulo Hand Towel
Bathroom, TowelsThe beautiful muted tones of the Tawulo blends beautifully into many interiors while adding texture and tone to your bathroom. The story behind the Tawulo comes from way back when the weavers in West Africa used natural dyes with a limited colour pallet. Once they saw European dyed fabric with brighter colours they would trade to get this cloth, which they would then unravel to get the yarn. The yarn was then rewoven into their own fabrics, often mixing different colours together which created a textured and uneven colour pallet. This technique has been integrated into the Tawulo. Each towel comes out slightly differently due to the random rolling of the weft yarn in the weaving process. 100% Cotton Hemmed Designed, woven and made in South Africa.
