[dropcap1]A[/dropcap1]dding rugs to cold tiles in the home is a must during winter, but it’s also an opportunity to make your interior design more stylish. Here are some easy ways to get layering your rugs right.
Make The Rugs Work On Some Level
When layering rugs, the general rule is that you use two rugs. It’s fun to combine two different rugs, but if they’re too different in style then they can cause a bit of a mess. Try to use rugs that are similar in one of the following: colour, pattern or texture. This creates common ground to keep your style on point.
Make Them Work For The Room
If you have a neutral carpet on the floor already, it’s just waiting for a small bright rug to bring it to life. The contrast is what makes it so eye-catching. However, be sure to place the top rug directly underneath something in the room that makes a statement, such as a floating piece of art or a beautiful light fixture. This pulls the room’s decor together.
Throw In Some Texture
Got two rugs that are almost identical? You can still layer them! The slight contrast in shade or texture is enough to create a bit of dimension to a room while making use of the rugs you already have so you don’t need to buy more. A tip if your rugs are identical: position the smaller one on top at an angle to create a difference.
Keep It Proportional
You don’t want your rugs to be too different when it comes to size as this can look odd. A good rule is to ensure that the bottom rug has approximately 14 inches around it on display. This prevents too much or too little of the rug from being seen.
Try A Different Shape
One element you don’t have to worry too much about matching is shape! Just because your bottom rug is square or rectangular, it doesn’t mean the rug on top has to be. Experiment with a circular or oval top rug, for example, to make the look more interesting.
Be Wary Of Furniture
Now that you’ve layered your rugs, ensure that your furniture doesn’t pull attention away from them. Be minimal with your furniture choices so the room doesn’t look cramped. This gives your gorgeous rugs a chance to shine in the spotlight.
