[dropcap1]I[/dropcap1]f you’re overwhelmed by the clutter in your home, you need to start tackling it now before it gets out of hand. But that doesn’t mean you need to dedicate days to spring-cleaning your home – seriously, who’s got the time for that? You can, however, break up your decluttering sessions into 10 minutes a pop. You can achieve more in that time than you think! Here are some tips.
Use The “KonMari” Method
This method was developed by a Japanese organizer called Marie Kondo. How it works is that you touch items that you’re sorting through and only keeping them if they make you feel a spark of joy. If not, or you’re just indifferent to them, then you shouldn’t keep them. They might do well to go into a bag for charity donations.
Choose One Small Area
You won’t be able to do all the decluttering in a room in 10 minutes, especially if it’s a big room or there’s lots of clutter. But you can choose one part of the room, such as a drawer or cupboard, and commit to decluttering it. That way, you’ll feel empowered and energized by the end of the task, instead of more overwhelmed than ever before.
Walk Around Every Room Armed With Bags
Take three bags and walk around every room, scanning surfaces for clutter. One bag is for trash, another for donations, and another for things you could upcycle. Without thinking too much about it, toss items that you never use into “trash”, others into “donations” and so on. This is a fast way to get rid of any clutter you see lying around.
Get More Storage Options For Rooms
Before you tackle decluttering a room, make sure you have sufficient storage so that clutter you want to keep can be organized efficiently right away. If your storage is baskets in the bathroom, for example, place them somewhere handy and use them to eliminate vanity counter clutter as well as those items you don’t really use but you might need someday, such as mosquito repellents. By having more storage options handy, it’ll make decluttering much easier because you’ll be cleaning and organizing in one go.
Set Yourself A Challenge
To keep yourself motivated to declutter during the 10-minute session, give yourself a challenge. For instance, commit to filling up one bag with useless items you don’t need. This is also fun to do with the family, which will speed up the decluttering process. Just make sure to have rewards handy for the person who fills up their bag the fastest!
