[dropcap1]Y[/dropcap1]ou might be tempted to choose the paint colours for your room before choosing other decor items, but this could be a faulty design process. According to some experts like award-winning designer Tobi Fairley, you should actually choose your paint colour as one of the last steps when redecorating. Here’s why.
You Keep Your Style Uninhibited
One of the risks of choosing paint colour before doing any other decorating in a space is that you limit yourself. You know the colour that’s going on the wall and if it’s a distinct one then you might end up making the error of matching everything to it. This can leave you with a room lacking in personality. It’s therefore better to think about items and furniture you want in the room, and then choose the paint colour to work with that.
You Get More Inspired
It’s not easy to choose a paint colour. You might stick to the usual tame picks, but that’s no fun. The great thing about choosing everything else before the paint colour is that you can get some out-the-box ideas for paint colour from the smallest things, such as a fresh green colour on a stylish sofa cushion or the blue bolt of colour in a painting.
Start With The Boldest Colour
What happens if you have more than one paint colour in a room? Still stick to choosing your paint last, but opt for this pattern: choose the boldest colour first, such as the red that’s going on an accent wall, and then choose the other colour(s) based on that. This prevents you from choosing something too bold as a final colour, which can throw off your whole room’s style. It also helps to choose the bold colour according to what’s happening in the room’s decor. Remember to stick to no more than three paint colours in a space: anything more is just colour clutter.
